HEROD’S TEMPLE
The Temple in Jerusalem no longer exists, but artistic renderings can help us imagine
what it would have looked like and what it would have been like to encounter Jesus there.
Since Solomon’s Temple had been destroyed in 586 bc, a smaller Second Temple was
built during the time of the prophet Haggai, after the Jews returned from exile in Babylon
(see Ezra 1–6). Several centuries later, Herod the Great, king of Judea at the time of Jesus’
birth, reconstructed the structure, replacing and expanding it. Herod’s massive project
began in 20 bc, and while the core of the new structure was finished in a decade, the
work was not fully completed until ad 64. This Temple was destroyed in ad 70, just six
years after its completion. Many events of Jesus’ life and ministry took place within the
Temple compound.
