Curtain
THE HOLY PLACE HEBREWS 9:1–10:25
The Temple in Jerusalem was God’s sanctuary, the place where God
met with his people through carefully prescribed rituals. The Holy
Place was accessible only to priests, who daily conducted rituals
within its walls (see Luke 1:5-25). Separated from the Holy Place by a
thick curtain was the Most Holy Place, where only the high priest was
allowed to enter, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement.
When Jesus died, the heavy curtain separating the Most Holy
Place from the Holy Place was torn in two (Matthew 27:51-52). Jesus
has gone as High Priest once for all time into the Most Holy Place in
heaven to atone for sin (Hebrews 9:11-12, 24). Now God’s holy presence
is accessible to all (Hebrews 10:19-22).
