But that’s not what is happening when this verse appears in the Bible. The joy didn’t come from the people
standing up on their own two feet. No. It came as the people sought the covering of God’s Word, allowing words of
life to be read over them, to be explained to them. And it didn’t come automatically, as they listened to the Bible
read out loud. Just as sometimes, when I read God’s story, I feel sad for the ways my life falls short, so these
listeners grieved. God’s Word showed them how good God is and how not good we as humans4individually and
together4are.
