G OD’S STORY
Luke 12:1-21
Jesus turned first to his disciples and warned them,
“Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees—their hypocrisy. The
time is coming when everything that is covered up will be
revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.
Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the
light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!”

There on the top left refrigerator shelf sits a small glass jar, filled with sourdough bread starter. It once belonged
to my sister, who’d make one loaf a day, swirling the top with beautiful designs, and take it to someone lucky.
When my family received a loaf, we’d gather in the kitchen, slice through the crusty top, toast it, and make it
disappear.
That sourdough starter, a version of yeast, fed us, connected us, and multiplied. Once I owned the starter, I
named it Sister the Sourdough Starter (Sister for short). After I baked bread each day, Sister feasted on a bit of
flour, enjoyed a warm spot near the oven, and prepared to feed more people the next day.
That is, until Sister’s private life ended her public good. In the privacy of my refrigerator, she got ignored and
grew mold. I read up on how to save her. After all, she reminded me of my only sister, and I could not get another
starter because my sister no longer makes bread. But the instructions were consistent: Throw bad starter out.
Start over.
