By doing this, the hosts gave us all a gift that no restaurant could: They gave us each other4a connectedness with
our hosts and with these once-strangers at the table. The hosts smiled as they welcomed me and showed me to
my daughter’s table; they set the tone. Older volunteers coached a newbie server who looked like she was about
seven, while a middle-school boy seated on a stool played guitar for background music. Through all this, the hosts
communicated to the guests4a mixture of those who whose bodies were typically abled and those who were
disabled4that everyone was welcome there.
I learned about the mom and dad whose 17-month-old sat in the high chair using baby sign language to
