• E X O DU S 3 4 :6 | “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to
anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”
• E PH E SI A NS 2 :4 -5 | But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though
we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life.
• PR O VE R B S 1 6 :6 | Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin.
God shows you mercy by being slow to get angry over your sins, by offering you eternal
life and salvation, and by showing you unfailing love no matter what you have done against
him.
• T I T U S 3 :5 | He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of
his mercy. (See note on page 1103.)
By God’s love you were given the free gift of salvation even though you didn’t deserve it.
Because of God’s mercy, you have forgiveness and freedom from guilt. Because of God’s
kindness, you have been blessed beyond your wildest dreams, for you have secured a
perfect life for all eternity in heaven.
Does God expect me to be merciful?

M
• MI CA H 6 :8 | O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of

How long will God’s mercy last?
• PSA L M 8 9 :2 | Your unfailing love will last forever.
• L A ME NTAT I O NS 3 :2 2 | The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.
• H O SE A 2 :1 9 | “I will make you my wife forever, showing you righteousness and justice,

• L U K E 1 :5 0 | “He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him.” (See note
on page 919.)
God’s mercy toward those who love him will last for all eternity. God’s mercy toward those
who ignore him will last only until Judgment Day.
What is grace? How do I receive it?
• R O MA NS 6 :2 3 | For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through
Christ Jesus our Lord.
Grace is a big favor you do for someone who doesn’t deserve it, and you do it without
expecting anything in return. When the Bible says “God saved you by his grace,” it means
that God has done you the biggest favor of all—he has pardoned you from the death
sentence you deserve for rebelling against him. By grace, you are forgiven for your sin and
restored to full fellowship with God. The only hitch to grace is that you must accept it like a
gift; otherwise, you can’t enjoy its benefits.
• E PH E SI A NS 2 :8 -9 | God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take
credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have
done, so none of us can boast about it.
It is by God’s grace that he decided to offer us the gift of salvation. There is nothing we
can do to earn it. We simply receive it with faith and in thanks. The fact that this is God’s
gift, and not the product of your own effort, gives you great comfort, security, and hope.
• PSA L M 8 4 :1 1 | He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from
those who do what is right.
Grace begins with God and is given freely by God. His graciousness to us is our example
for extending grace and mercy to others.
