True kindness is not a single act but a lifestyle. Begin showing kindness in the small things
you do and say until you are truly kind in all situations.
• L U K E 1 0 :3 0 -3 3 | Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem
down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat
him up, and left him half dead beside the road. By chance a priest came along. But when
he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. . . .
Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion
for him.”
• DE U T E R O NO MY 2 2 :1 | If you see your neighbor’s ox or sheep or goat wandering away,
don’t ignore your responsibility. Take it back to its owner.
• A C T S 3 :6 | Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have.”
Kindness does not look the other way and ignore the needy. Instead, kindness is attentive
to and responds sensitively to the needs of others.
• G A L AT I A NS 6 :1 0 | Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone.
• A C T S 2 8 :2 | The people of the island were very kind to us. It was cold and rainy, so they
built a fire on the shore to welcome us.
N
Kindness looks for opportunities to help, such as times of trouble and hardship.
• C O L O SS I A NS 3 :1 2 -1 3 | Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must
clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember,
the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
• 1 PE T E R 3 :9 | Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you.
Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will
grant you his blessing.
Kindness is forgiving others, showing them grace and mercy, even if they don’t deserve it.
• MAT T H E W 5 :4 2 | “Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to
borrow.”
• I SA I A H 5 8 :7 | “Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give
clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.”
• L U K E 3 :1 1 | John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food,
share it with those who are hungry.”
Kindness is generously sharing what you have with others.
• R O MA NS 1 2 :1 3 | When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager
to practice hospitality.
• 1 PE T E R 4 :9 | Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.
• G E NE SI S 2 4 :3 2 | So the man went home with Laban, and Laban unloaded the camels,
gave him straw for their bedding, fed them, and provided water for the man and the camel
drivers to wash their feet.
Kindness is shown by practicing hospitality.
• 2 T I MOT H Y 2 :2 4 | A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone,
be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.
• 2 SA MU E L 1 2 :7 -1 3 | Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man! . . . Why, then, have
you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed?” . . . Then David confessed
to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”
• G A L AT I A NS 2 :1 1 | But when Peter came to Antioch, I had to oppose him to his face, for
what he did was very wrong.
Kindness is different from niceness. Sometimes kindness requires that you teach important
truths that may be unpopular. Sometimes kindness requires that we confront other believers
who have sinned, with the hope that they will confess their wrongs and return to the Lord.
