• J A ME S 1 :2 5 | But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do
what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
Opportunities See also Purpose
In many ways, our lives are defined by opportunities seized or missed. According to
the Bible, we are to take advantage of opportunities by responding with bold action
when we recognize them as God-given chances to participate in his purpose. At all
times we must be prepared to recognize and act upon the opportunities that God creates for us to be used by and for him. However, the greatest opportunity is the gift of
salvation that God allows us to receive for free if we believe and obey him. We should
work hard to make others aware of this gift so they don’t miss out on this greatest of
opportunities.
How can I prepare for opportunities before they come?
• J O H N 1 2 :3 5 | Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the
light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness
cannot see where they are going.”
God regularly places “divine moments” right in front of us—opportunities to do good, help
someone in need, or share what you know about God. Always be on the lookout for these
opportunities to be a witness for your faith in word or deed. God will put them in front
of you; you need to act on them. And God promises he will make an important spiritual
moment from that.
How do I make the most of my opportunities?
• PH I L I PP I A NS 1 :1 4 | And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have
gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.
• J O H N 9 :4 | “We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The
night is coming, and then no one can work.”
• G E NE SI S 4 0 :8 | And they replied, “We both had dreams last night, but no one can tell us
what they mean.” “Interpreting dreams is God’s business,” Joseph replied. “Go ahead and
tell me your dreams.”
When you see an opportunity to do good, jump on it. The more you think about it the less
likely you are to act. Even when you are experiencing personal hardship, helping others
can be therapeutic.
• J E R E MI A H 1 3 :1 6 | Give glory to the Lord your God before it is too late. Acknowledge him
before he brings darkness upon you, causing you to stumble and fall on the darkening
mountains.
• MAT T H E W 3 :2 | “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
Now is the time to respond to God’s call and get to know him and his purpose for you. You
never know when it will be too late.
• G E NE SI S 3 9 :4 , 6 | Potiphar . . . put [Joseph] in charge of his entire household and
everything he owned. . . . With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing.
• G E NE SI S 4 1 :1 , 1 4 , 3 9 -4 0 | Two full years later . . . Pharaoh sent for Joseph at once, and
he was quickly brought from the prison. . . . Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has
revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as
you are. You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you.
Only I, sitting on my throne, will have a rank higher than yours.”

To walk in the light means to stay as close to Jesus as you can through prayer, Bible study,
and fellowship with other Christians. Walking in Christ’s light will help you more clearly see
the opportunities he sends you.
