From betrayal, neglect, and abandonment to breaking an arm or failing health—the end
result is some kind of emotional or physical pain. When we look back on our lives, we can
all remember the physical tension of our aching bodies or the chest-tightening ache that
comes from a broken heart. Our greatest hope in times of pain is finding healing from God.
Although he does not promise to remove our pain in this life, God does promise to be with
us in it and give us hope and purpose in the despair of our aching bodies and souls. And
most importantly, God promises to remove our pain forever in eternity.

consequences.

you into thinking that sin will relieve your pain, but just the opposite happens. Falling prey
to Satan’s attacks and lies or giving in to his temptations will always cause you pain.
• J O B 2 : 6 - 7 | “All right, do with him as you please,” the Lord said to Satan. “But spare his
life.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head
to foot.

Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”
• 2 C O R I N T H I A N S 1 2 :7 | I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep

Satan’s activity causes pain because we live in a fallen world. Even innocent people
become victims of the sickness and tragedy that fall upon those who are good and those
who are evil.
• G E N E S I S 3 0 : 1 - 2 | When Rachel saw that she wasn’t having any children for Jacob, she
became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!” Then
Jacob became furious with Rachel. “Am I God?” he asked. “He’s the one who has kept you
from having children!” (See note on page 28.)
Sometimes you feel pain when it seems God does not want to grant you your deepest
desires, even if your motives are good.
• E XO D U S 1 : 1 1 | So the Egyptians made the Israelites their slaves. They appointed brutal
slave drivers over them, hoping to wear them down with crushing labor. They forced them
to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses as supply centers for the king.
• L UK E 1 3 : 1 - 3 | About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people
from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. “Do you think those Galileans
were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they
suffered? Not at all!”
