Pain continued
• H O S E A 1 : 2 ; 3 : 1 | When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to
him, “Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the Lord
and worshiping other gods.”. . . Then the Lord said to me, “Go and love your wife again,
even though she commits adultery with another lover. This will illustrate that the Lord
still loves Israel, even though the people have turned to other gods and love to worship
them.”

• E B R E W S 5 : 8 | Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he
suffered.
Even obedience can be painful sometimes.
Is God absent in my times of pain and trouble?

• G EN E S I S 3 7 : 2 8 ; 3 9 : 3 | So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by,
Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty pieces of
silver. And the traders took him to Egypt. . . . The Lord was with Joseph, giving him success
in everything he did.
• 1 P E T E R 5 : 1 0 | After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and
strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
• 2 C O R I N T H I A N S 4 : 9 | We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked
down, but we are not destroyed.

When you accidentally cut yourself, you become completely focused on how bad it is
and on how to stop the bleeding. Feeling like God has abandoned you is often caused by
becoming so focused on easing the pain of your problems that you forget that God has
promised to help you in your difficulties. To abandon you, God would have to stop loving
you, and he cannot do that, for he is love.
How does God help me deal with my pain?
• P SA L M 5 5 : 2 2 | Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you.
• 1 P E T E R 5 : 7 | Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
• P S A L M 3 1 : 7 | I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my
troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul.
It is easier to deal with pain when someone is helping you through it, and there is no one
better to help than God! These verses are not saying that God will keep you from experiencing pain, but that he will keep you from being defeated by it if you go to him for help
and healing. Place your pain on his shoulders so he can help you bear it.
• P SA L M 1 0 : 1 7 | Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries
and comfort them.
• P S A L M 1 1 9 : 7 6 | Now let your unfailing love comfort me, just as you promised me, your
servant.
• 2 C O R I N T H I A N S 1 : 3 - 4 | All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our
merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we
can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort
God has given us.
God listens, loves, blesses, and comforts us when we are in pain. While others do this
inconsistently, God is unfailing.
• P S A L M 6 9 : 2 9 | I am suffering and in pain. Rescue me, O God, by your saving power.
Go first to the One who is all-powerful and can help you most with your hurt and pain. Not
only can God heal your pain on earth, but his power of salvation will free you from all pain
in eternity.
• P S A L M 2 5 : 1 8 | Feel my pain and see my trouble. Forgive all my sins.
It is painful to be controlled by sin or a sinful habit. God’s forgiveness frees you from slavery to sin and gives you the power to overcome it.
