The Good
Samaritan
How many people passed by the
wounded Jewish man without
helping him?

Samaria had been the capital of
Israel’s northern kingdom. When
the northern kingdom was taken
captive by the Assyrian Empire
(many generations before Jesus
was born), foreigners married
the remaining Israelites, and
their children were known as
Samaritans. The Jews despised
the Samaritans because they
were a mixed race and followed
different religious traditions,
whereas the Jews prided
themselves on being a pure race
and having the true faith.
One day Jesus told a parable
about a Samaritan: A Jew was
traveling from Jerusalem to
Jericho when robbers attacked
him. They beat him and left him
half dead. A priest came by, but
instead of helping the man, he
walked past him on the other
side of the road. Next a Levite,
who was a Temple assistant,
came by. But he, too, passed the
injured man and left him to die.
Then a Samaritan came by.
Even though the Jews hated
people like him, he bandaged
the man’s wounds, put him on
the Samaritan’s own donkey,
and took him to the local inn. He
even paid for the man’s room.
Jesus used this story to teach
us to help one another without
worrying about what race or
color someone is. He loves
everyone, and we should too.

kings longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to
hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.”
The Most Important Commandment
25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this
question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
27 The man answered, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your
heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your
neighbor as yourself.’ ”*
28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”
29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is
my neighbor?”
Parable of the Good Samaritan
30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem
down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his
clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.
31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there,
he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple
assistant* walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by
on the other side.
33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he
felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his
wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man
on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The
next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins,* telling him, ‘Take care of
this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’
36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man
who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
Jesus Visits Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came
to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her
home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.
40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came
to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits
here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset
over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned
about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Teaching about Prayer
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his
disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John
taught his disciples.”
2 Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:*

“Father, may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.
3 Give us each day the food we need,*
4 and forgive us our sins,

equivalent to a laborer’s full day’s wage. 11:2 Some manuscripts add additional phrases from the
Lord’s Prayer as it reads in Matt 6:9‑13. 11:3 Or Give us each day our food for the day; or Give us
each day our food for tomorrow.
