She first came to us after the death of her husband. When he
passed away, she felt deeply lonely. She told us later that she
needed to find new rhythms for her life, somewhere to serve, to
meet people, to feel useful again. PdV became that place for her.

Like many French friends we meet, Mamie Sophie loves
what we do, but she’s been very clear from the beginning:
“Don’t count on me for anything Christian.” We told her she’s
welcome just as she is—to help the children with homework,
to serve, to belong—whether or not she believes. And so,
she came and continued to come.

One of our volunteers, a retired nurse, is 84 years old, and for
the past three years she has come faithfully every Wednesday
morning to Parfums de Vie (PdV). She’s compassionate, patient,
and fun—the kids absolutely love her and so do we. We all
affectionately call her “Mamie.”

But one week, something changed! For the first time, Mamie
stayed longer than usual and joined the group for time in the
Word. She sat quietly among them, listening to the story and
the children’s reflections.
Then came the prayer time, and one of our nine-year-old boys
prayed softly “for all the people who are no longer with us—
that they are with God and that we will see them again one day.”
At that moment, I saw tears well up in Mamie’s eyes. His words
touched something deep inside her. The innocence of a child’s
profound words caught her off guard. Then another child
remembered that Mamie had been unwell the week before and
still had a bad cough, and said he wanted to pray for her—and
one by one, the children began to pray for Mamie’s healing.
Mamie quietly wiped away tears as these children ministered
to her heart—through their pure faith, uninhibited words,
and their belief that God cares and hears their prayers.
